I got into ultra running on trails a few years ago. I think I was drawn to it for nature and the chance to get in touch with myself. I have been a mountaineer for two decades and these experiences are similar. When I am on a mountain, far from home and help, it is up to me. All of the focus is on hand placement, ice axe position, foot placement, etc. The troubles of the world fade away in the moment. Being mindful is what it is about.
Ultra running is similar. Being in the moment and listening to my mind and body is what I do. I now crave this experience and want this feeling as often as I can squeeze it to my busy life. The longer the run, the more satisfying the experience.
